Deciding to seek substance abuse recovery treatment is courageous. There are several recovery treatment options available, and they will differ depending upon one’s addiction and individual needs. Some may benefit most from an outpatient rehab program, whereas some may need an inpatient rehab program.

Determining what substance abuse treatment program to enter is typically discussed amongst a team of addiction professionals. After assessing a person’s needs, a recovery treatment plan is developed to start with a drug and alcohol addiction treatment program. There are thousands of substance abuse treatment centers in the United States, so choosing the right one is important.

Addiction Treatment Programs

Many rehab programs address different levels of care. Most people pass through the levels of care similarly, typically finishing their treatment program with an aftercare plan that includes sober living. However, it is important to remember that everyone’s addiction recovery journey is different. As such, an addiction treatment plan that works for one person may not work for another.

Below, we go through each of the most common addiction treatment programs available today.

Medical Detox Program

The initial step in an addiction treatment program is medical detox, which is vital for someone with a physical dependence on benzodiazepines, heroin, alcohol, or others. The goal of a medical detox program is to ensure a safe environment for withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms will be monitored, and the individual is kept safe and as comfortable as possible.

In addition to medical supervision, addiction professionals may administer medications to address the symptoms of withdrawal. Some common medical detox medications are methadone, buprenorphine, Librium, and anti-seizure medications.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program

Medication-assisted treatment programs combine the benefits of medication, behavioral therapies, and counseling to treat substance use disorders. Often used to treat opioid and alcohol addictions, MAT serves to target both the physical and emotional aspects linked to addiction.

Research points to a wide range of successes associated with MAT. Patients who have utilized this type of substance abuse treatment program have shown a reduction in opiate abuse or opioid abuse. Medication-assisted rehab programs are said to have a long-lasting impact that lays the foundation for sober living.

Residential Recovery Program

Residential recovery programs offer a comfortable living environment for a person’s addiction rehab. Commonly longer in duration than an inpatient rehab program, residential recovery allows people to receive drug and alcohol rehab treatment on a full-time basis. The length of stay can be anywhere from weeks to months. Regardless of the length of stay, one will receive a comprehensive treatment plan that tackles addiction head-on.

Inpatient Rehab Program

Inpatient treatment is usually in a clinic or hospital setting, where there is 24-hour a day supervision by addiction professionals and nurses. While it is similar to a residential recovery program, inpatient treatment is typically shorter in duration, often thirty to ninety days. Like many other substance abuse treatment programs, individuals will receive medications while undergoing individual and group therapy. As one moves along the treatment continuum of care, the rehab’s addiction professionals will develop a plan to move them from inpatient to an outpatient setting to continue treatment.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Partial hospitalization programs offer individuals intensive addiction recovery services, providing the same level of care as inpatient rehab; however, most people will live at home or in sober living while attending PHP. This is an excellent bridge between inpatient care and an outpatient program for the person who is motivated and accountable.

A typical day will include arriving at the facility and participating in individual and group therapy. Some programs will also offer wellness options, such as yoga, or include art therapy. Programs may offer services during the day, evening, and on weekends. Since there is much more freedom in PHP, this treatment option is ideal for people motivated for recovery.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP)

Intensive outpatient treatment is offered for people living at home or in a sober living facility. IOP addresses addiction with both medication and counseling and includes individual and group therapy. This addiction recovery treatment option is often suitable for those who have completed treatment in a residential facility and are pursuing continued care. IOP is an excellent solution to keeping one engaged in professional recovery services while providing greater freedom and responsibility.

Outpatient Rehab Program

An outpatient rehab program offers many of the same services as an IOP, including medication and counseling. The time at a treatment facility participating in groups and other therapies is decreased from an IOP level. This provides an option for people to meet their responsibilities, such as work or family, and is an excellent transition for most people as they begin to build a sober life.

Sober Living Home

Following drug and alcohol addiction treatment, it is recommended one engage in an aftercare plan. This is usually the last phase in a comprehensive addiction recovery treatment plan. Taking advantage of services like peer support and sober living homes (halfway or three-quarter house) are critical to reducing the likelihood of a relapse. It’s been demonstrated that the longer a person remains in a sober living home or environment, the greater their chances are of continued sobriety.

Dual Diagnosis

Treating co-occurring disorders is an important part of many substance abuse treatment programs. Treatment will target substance use addiction as well as any co-occurring mental illness. In many cases, someone enters treatment, unaware that they are dealing with addiction and a mental health condition. Recognizing this is vital to develop a comprehensive addiction recovery plan. By combining medications and counseling, this wholistic approach allows patients to work on their whole selves while setting a strong foundation for a healthy, sober lifestyle.
